The sheriff gives you a stack of legal papers. Small text, unfamiliar words, threatening tone--what does it all mean? Snap a picture of it on your phone and a smart document assembly system tells you it is an eviction summons, helps you prepare and file a response, texts reminders of the court date, and connects you with legal advocates to review your case. If we had unlimited resources, what kinds of automated document resources would we build? In this interactive session, panelists will discuss the various ways future self- represented litigants (SRLs) could interface with online systems to make document assembly and filing easy. Panelists and participants will also explore: What "must-have" features will help SRLs leverage technology to use court forms? How can advocates and developers rapidly craft document assembly systems with essential services? What do these systems require to interface with the courts? The panel hopes that a discussion about "dream" automated document systems will inspire and inform user-centered design.
