LSC's 2019 Innovations in Technology Conference

Over the past few years, technology has emerged as a potential solution to addressing the justice gap. Low-income people regularly have to share their personal information with city, state, and federal agencies to determine their eligibility for certain social service programs. Research has shown that most people do not understand the complexity of our privacy laws related to data gathering and sharing. For the legal tech industry to succeed, it must not neglect the existing concerns others have encountered when working to address the needs of underserved populations. In this session, the panel will raise awareness about privacy issues from the perspective of low-income and underserved communities. Additionally, the panelists will share their insights on how to build purposeful data collection models, which are those where data-gathering and sharing is limited to fulfilling the intended goal of the program and potential recipients are knowledgeable about how their data will be used and the risks associated with the disclosure of said information.
