In 2019, the beta versions of online “justice portals” will launch in Alaska and Hawaii using natural language processing, machine learning, and other cutting-edge technology. Now dubbed Legal Navigator, the goal of these pilots is to bring together three key elements – technology, content, and community – to help all people with civil legal needs more easily understand their legal problem and find a path forward. This session will highlight the latest updates in the Legal Navigator initiative, including how Microsoft’s Inclusive Design process was operationalized in the design of the technology and content strategy. Panelists will discuss a collaborative process mapping project Alaska and Hawaii engaged in to simplify pathways for people seeking help on common issues. Lastly, presenters will discuss next steps in the rollout and replication and integration of Legal Navigator’s technology with other systems in place within legal aid and court and social services contexts.
